The main challenge of the interior design project for the Velodrom bicycle shop and La Maglia tasting point has been to develop a proposal capable of respecting and preserving the building’s original architecture as much as possible, maintaining its essence and historical memory intact.
In keeping with the imposing and bold aesthetics of the space, concrete has been chosen for the flooring as well as for most of the display surfaces. The shelving units have been designed using iron profiles with meticulous attention to detail, addressing both the functional and aesthetic requirements of the project.
To soften the strength and rigidity of the industrial materials, noble materials such as wood—bringing warmth—and porcelain stoneware—adding sophistication—have been incorporated. The design is completed with a color palette of red and green tones, inspired by the Girona Old Town color chart. These colors are mainly introduced through custom carpentry and furniture, which, through textures and finishes, bring visual richness and material depth. This creates a balanced dialogue between the building’s historical heritage and the contemporary expression of the space.
One of the project’s most distinctive elements is the use of curtains, paying homage to the former ballroom the building once housed. This element enhances the spatial experience by highlighting the vaulted ceiling and the spectacular mural paintings, restoring both their original symbolism and character.
Lighting is one of the key strengths of the intervention. On one hand, a suspended and backlit false ceiling has been designed to emphasize the majesty of the space. On the other hand, diverse atmospheres have been created throughout the space through the definition of settings and the interplay of light and shadow, transforming the space into an immersive and sensory experience.
The central core of the proposal is a stepped seating area crowned by a tree, conceived as a symbolic gesture of opening the building to the city. This space is intended to become a meeting point for culture and collective activities, strengthening the bond between the community and the architectural heritage.
